Respiratory allergens in melaleuca and non-melaleuca environments

This research documents the indirect negative role of melaleuca on human health by studying microbial cell concentrations in the air. In this study we trap microbial cells in the air in melaleuca and saw grass stands, determine cell concentrations of culturable microbes using standard laboratory techniques. Findings will be used to educate people living in and around melaleuca infested areas.

Preliminary data show higher microbial cell count in and around melaleuca stands as compared to open spaces or sawgrass areas.

We will determine the indirectly negative role of melaleuca on human health based on

  1. microbial cell concentrations in the air,
  2. type of microbial cells involved, and
  3. their identity as human allergen (based on literature).
